.post represents a sponsored top-level domain (STLD) accessible exclusively to entities within the postal sector, featuring DNSSEC security protocols. The domain is designed to integrate the physical, financial, and electronic dimensions of postal services, thereby enabling and facilitating e-post, e-finance, e-commerce, and e-government services. ICANN granted approval for this domain on 8 April 2005, designating it as a sponsored TLD within the second group of new TLD applications evaluated during 2004.[1]

In 2004, the Universal Postal Union (UPU), headquartered in Bern, became the first United Nations agency to obtain a top-level domain (TLD) from ICANN. Subsequently, in 2009, ICANN and the UPU executed a landmark agreement, conferring managing authority over .post as a top-level domain upon the UPU. This agreement emerged following extensive negotiations and public review processes through ICANN's public comment mechanism, internal reviews within the UPU governing councils, and subsequent consideration by ICANN's Board of Directors.
Having been delegated authority for .post, the UPU assumes responsibility for developing, implementing, and monitoring governmental rules governing the domain. Additionally, the UPU is tasked with attributing domain names to postal-sector stakeholders who satisfy the established eligibility criteria. The STLD was officially added to the IANA TLD registry on 8 August 2012.
