Kuldeep Kumar (born 1989), popularly known as Monu, is an Indian politician and a member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly representing the Kondli constituency since 2020. A prominent Dalit face of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), he has served as the youngest councillor in the Delhi Municipal Corporation and was the party's candidate for the East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency in the 2024 general elections.[1]

Early life and background[edit | edit source]

Kuldeep Kumar was born and raised in a 200-sq-ft house in Mandawali, East Delhi. His father, Sri Prakash, worked as a sanitation worker (safai karmachari) and a rickshaw puller. Coming from a humble background, Kumar began his social work at the age of 18 and founded the "Ambedkar Andolan" to promote education among Dalit youth. He studied at Shyam Lal College, Delhi University.[2]

Political career[edit | edit source]

Kumar started his political journey as a volunteer during the Anna Hazare-led India Against Corruption movement in 2011.

  • MCD Councillor: In 2017, at the age of 27, he became the youngest councillor in Delhi after winning from the Kalyanpuri ward. He also served as the Leader of Opposition in the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC).
  • Legislative Assembly: He was first elected to the Delhi Assembly in 2020 from the Kondli seat. In the 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections, he successfully retained his seat, winning by a margin of over 6,000 votes.[3]
  • Lok Sabha Contest (2024): He was nominated by the AAP-INC alliance for the East Delhi seat in the 2024 Indian general election. Although he secured over 5.8 lakh votes, he lost to BJP's Harsh Malhotra.[4]
