Dr. I Ketut Wiana (14 September 1945 – 19 April 2023) was an Indonesian Hindu scholar and educator. He was widely regarded as one of the foremost authorities on Agama Hindu Dharma, the officially recognized form of Hinduism in Indonesia.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Wiana was born in Denpasar, Bali, in 1945.[1] He devoted over 40 years to teaching at the Institut Hindu Dharma Negeri (IHDN) Denpasar (now Universitas Hindu Negeri I Gusti Bagus Sugriwa), where he was a senior lecturer.[2][1] Beyond academia, he built a school in his home village, driven by a commitment to Hindu religious education.[1]

Wiana died in Denpasar on 19 April 2023, at the age of 77, following a long illness that included multiple strokes since 2016.[1] He was survived by his wife, five children, one adopted child, and 15 grandchildren.[1]

Career[edit | edit source]

Wiana was a prolific writer and public intellectual. For over 30 years, he authored the Hindu religion column for Bali Post, addressing topics from religious sociology to practical solutions grounded in Hindu teachings.[1] He also contributed to numerous magazines and frequently appeared as a speaker and resource person on television and radio programs.[1]

He held leadership roles within the Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI), serving as vice-chairman.[2] He was also a member of the Sabha Walaka of the central PHDI.[3] His expertise led to his appointment as an expert team member for Hindu affairs by the Governor of Bali across multiple administrations.[1]

Advocacy[edit | edit source]

Wiana was a prominent advocate for environmental conservation within a Hindu framework. He urged Balinese to not sacrifice sea turtles in puja and to follow Indonesian regulations on protecting the endangered species, citing the Vedas.[4][3] He argued that turtle meat could be replaced with symbolic offerings such as turtle-shaped rice cakes (jaja cacalan), emphasizing that the intent of the ceremony remained unchanged.[3][4]

His advocacy contributed to the Indonesian Hindu High Council (PHDI) declaring that the use of sea turtles in offerings is not obligatory, and that Hindus should respect and follow sea turtle protection laws.[4]

Works[edit | edit source]

Wiana authored dozens of books on Balinese Hindu customs, theology, and practice. His notable works include:

  • Suksmaning Banten (2009)[5]
  • Beragama pada Zaman Kali [Religion in the Kali Era] (1999)[6]
  • Cara Belajar Agama Hindu yang Baik (1997)[7]
