Barjuli (also romanized as Baljuri or Balijuri) is a mountain peak in the Kumaon Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India. It has an elevation of 5,922 metres (19,429ft) above sea level and a topographic prominence of approximately 562 metres (1,844ft). The peak is located in the Bageshwar district, in close proximity to the Pindari Glacier and the outer rim of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.[1][2][3] Pindari glacier is melting due to global warming.[4]

Geography[edit | edit source]

Barjuli is situated along the ridge systems flanking the upper reaches of the Pindar River basin. It stands south of higher Himalayan peaks such as Panwali Dwar (6,663m) and Nanda Khat (6,611m), with Maiktoli (6,803m), Changuch (6,322m), and Nanda Kot (6,861m) located in the adjacent valleys and massifs. Meltwater from snowfields and glaciers surrounding the peak feeds tributaries of the Pindar River.[5]

Mountaineering[edit | edit source]

Due to its moderate elevation (sub-6,000m) and relatively accessible approach, Barjuli is frequently climbed as an introductory expedition peak for mountaineers transitioning from high-altitude trekking to alpine climbing.

The standard climbing route follows the established Pindari Glacier trail, typically starting from the village of Khati and passing through settlements and waypoints at Dwali and Phurkia to Zero Point. From the base of the glacier, climbers establish high camps to tackle the Baljuri Col and ascend the snow and moraine ridges toward the summit.[6]
