Divya Modi is an Indian entrepreneur, investor and mentor. She has worked across healthcare, financial services, retail and real estate, and has been involved in entrepreneurship mentoring and investment. She is also a postgraduate researcher at the University of Surrey, where her research examines the role of Knowledge Transfer Offices within university entrepreneurial ecosystems.[1]

Modi has held leadership roles in businesses associated with the Smart Global Group, formerly known as Spice Global, and has been involved in the development of healthcare, retail and financial-services ventures. She has also worked as an investor and mentor to early-stage businesses.[2]

Modi studied Economics and Business Finance at Brunel University London, graduating with First Class Honours. She subsequently completed a Master's degree in Accounting at the University of Southern California and an MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. She is also a CFA charterholder.[3][4]

Modi began her career in the family business and subsequently worked across several sectors. Her early projects included the development of Spice World, a retail and entertainment centre in Noida. In an interview with Entrepreneur India, she described her involvement in the project from its conceptualisation and construction through to its operations.[5]

She later became involved with Smart Global Group, formerly known as Spice Global. Penguin Random House India has identified Modi as a co-founder of Smart Global Group, which has interests in telecommunications, healthcare, finance and real estate.[6]

According to the USC India Innovation Summit, Modi worked for more than 15 years in an entrepreneurial family-owned business environment and was involved in establishing multi-million-dollar projects. The same profile describes her leadership experience in healthcare, retail and financial services.[7]

One of Modi's early projects was Spice World in Noida, a retail and entertainment centre combining cinema, food and retail facilities. Entrepreneur India reported that she was involved in the project's conceptualisation, property development, design and operations.[8]

The University of Surrey states that Modi has worked across the retail, healthcare and financial-services sectors and has established, managed and exited several entrepreneurial ventures.[9]

Financial services[edit | edit source]

Modi was involved with Wall Street Finance Limited, an Indian financial-services company. Company records identify Divya Modi-Tongya as a director and also record her association with S Global Insurance Advisory Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wall Street Finance Limited.[10]

The USC India Innovation Summit describes Modi as having been involved in the acquisition, turnaround and growth of a financial-services business.[11]

Healthcare[edit | edit source]

Modi was involved in the development of Saket City Hospital in New Delhi, a super-speciality healthcare facility associated with the Smart Global Group.

In 2014, Business Standard reported that Saket City Hospital planned an expansion involving an additional 350 beds. Modi-Tongya, identified in the report as vice chairperson of the hospital, discussed the group's plans for developing the facility and its wider property.[12]

Entrepreneur India subsequently reported that Modi had led the group's entry into healthcare through the establishment of a super-speciality healthcare facility as part of the Saket MediCiti development in New Delhi.[13]

Investment and entrepreneurship[edit | edit source]

Modi has also worked as an investor and mentor. Entrepreneur India reported in 2018 that she had established Interweave Ventures as part of the family office associated with the Smart Group. The venture was described as investing in businesses in emerging sectors where the group believed it could create value.[14]

Utah Valley University's Woodbury School of Business has described Modi as an investor and mentor to entrepreneurs. The university states that her investment activities include providing seed funding to start-ups and supporting businesses with financial and operational expertise.[15]

She has also participated in entrepreneurship programmes and lectures. In 2019, Utah Valley University's Woodbury School of Business featured her in its Silicon Slopes Lecture Series.[16]

Modi has supported initiatives relating to education and women's empowerment. Her official website describes her involvement with non-governmental organisations working with children and girls from disadvantaged communities, including support for educational opportunities and skills development.[17]

Modi is a postgraduate research student at the University of Surrey. Her research project is titled The Role and Agency of Knowledge Transfer Offices within University Entrepreneurial Ecosystems.

Her research examines Knowledge Transfer Offices and their role in supporting innovation, intellectual property management and business development within university entrepreneurial ecosystems. The University of Surrey lists her research interests as business transformation, innovation and entrepreneurship.[19]

The University of Surrey also states that Modi serves on the International Advisory Board at Utah Valley University.[20]

Modi has participated in public discussions and lectures on entrepreneurship, investment, business leadership and India's business environment. The USC India Innovation Summit has featured her as an investor and entrepreneur, while Utah Valley University has hosted her as part of its entrepreneurship lecture series.[21][22]

Modi was also featured in Daughters of Legacy, a book by Rinku Paul and Puja Singhal about women from prominent business families. Penguin Random House India identified her as a co-founder of Smart Global Group.[23]
