History[edit | edit source]

Rowail Zamindar Palace, also known as Rowail Zamindar Bari or Rowail Rajbari is an early nineteenth century 150 room palace established around 1801 to 1803 by Raja Virendra Mohan Dar Bahadur.[1]

In 1870, Raja Hara Mohan Dhar, father of Mohini Mohan Dhar sold the palace to the brothers Raja Ramendra Mohan Ray and Raja Kamud Mohan Ray at the cost of 5 Lakh Rupees.[2] The Ray family rebuilt and reconstructed the palace and the ancient Shiv Mandir in the palace compund.[3] Princess Pritilata Dhar, the grand-daughter of Mohini Mohan Dhar, was born in the palace.[4]

Current state[edit | edit source]

The Rowail Zamindar palace still exists in the Rowail village, but in scattered ruins. Most of the part of the palace was demolished by the authorities.
