Central America is a geographical region of the Americas. It is located between North America and South America and extends from Mexico in the northwest to Panama in the southeast.
Central America has an area of about 524,000 km2. It consists of seven countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Central America is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the southwest and the Caribbean Sea to the northeast. The region has mountains, valleys, forests, tropical areas and many volcanoes. It is part of the Caribbean Plate and experiences earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.[1]
The Isthmus of Panama connects Central America with South America. The region is also an important land bridge between North and South America.[2]
Biodiversity[edit | edit source]
Central America is part of the Mesoamerican biodiversity region. It has tropical forests and a wide variety of plants and animals. The region contains species from both North and South America.[3]
