A vanity press is a publishing company that charges authors a fee to publish their books, instead of paying the author and earning money from sales to readers. Because vanity presses accept nearly any manuscript from a paying customer, their books receive little independent editorial selection, marketing or distribution, and a vanity-press publication is not usually treated as a mark of a book's importance.
