A primary source is a first-hand record or piece of evidence about a subject, created at the time being studied or by someone who directly took part in or witnessed the events. Examples include diaries, letters, official records, photographs, interviews and original documents. Primary sources are contrasted with secondary sources, which describe and analyse primary material.
