A blockchain is a type of digital ledger in which records, called blocks, are linked together in a chain using cryptography. Copies of the ledger are shared across many computers, so records are difficult to alter once added. Blockchains are best known as the technology behind cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, and are also used for other record-keeping applications.
