Astroturfing is the practice of making a campaign or message appear to come spontaneously from ordinary members of the public (a grassroots movement, or "astroturf" being artificial grass) when it is in fact organised and funded by a company, political group or other interested party. It is considered deceptive because it hides the real sponsor behind an appearance of public support.
