Mongba Hanba
"Mongba Hanba" (Meitei: ꯃꯣꯡꯕ ꯍꯟꯕ), also spelt as "Mongpa Hanpa" (Old Manipuri: ꯃꯣꯡꯄ ꯍꯟꯄ), is a primordial sylvan deity in Meitei religion. He is mainly worshipped in the sacred forest named "Mongba Hanba Umang", in the bank of the Imphal river in Manipur.[1] According to religious custom, Tampak Maiba was to worship the deity.[2] The atmosphere of blood sacrifice is said to be associated with the shrine of the deity.[3] Historically, the identity of the deity was fused into that of Hindu god Hanuman during the reign of Meitei king Garib Niwaj.[4][5] Presently, despite having repeated attempts to revive the pantheon of the deity, there is still opposition from the Hindu religious body of the temple dedicated to Hanuman.[6]
