The Shankarjati are an Indian caste found in Maharashtra. This group contains a variety of classes, and is believed to have been formed of mixed-caste marriages, though they now divide themselves into distinct castes. A British commentator noted that they attempt to "pass themselves off as Marathas", and that "Native officers and recruiters should be warned not to enlist them, any deceit should be readily detected."[1]
