India, located between the Golden Crescent and Golden Triangle, is the world's largest producer of licit opium for the pharmaceutical trade.[1] Due to its geographical location, India experiences a large amount of drug trafficking through its borders. Heroin is smuggled from Pakistan and Burma, with some quantities transshipped through Nepal.[2] Most heroin shipped from India are destined for Europe, with some reports of heroin smuggled from Mumbai to Nigeria for further export. Mumbai is an important center for distribution of drug, with the most commonly used drug being Indian heroin. Both public and private transportation are used for this drug trade.[3] Drug trafficking affects the country in many ways, including drug abuse, organized crime, political instability, and the growth of organized crime. The most common drugs used in India are cannabis, hashish, opium, and heroin. The Indian government has taken several measures to combat drug trafficking, including being a party to the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, the Convention on Psychotropic Substances, the Protocol Amending the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, and the United Nations Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.
