ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and the incumbent Member of Parliament of Raozan upazila in Chittagong District.[1] He is the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the Railways Ministry.[2]

Early life

Chowdhury was born on 6 November 1954.[3] He has a B. A. and a M. A. degree.[3] His father was AKM Fazlul Kabir Chowdhury and his uncle was Fazlul Quader Chowdhury.[4] His cousins are Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Saber Hossain Chowdhury.

Career

Chowdhury was elected to Parliament in 2001 from Chittagong-6 as an Awami League candidate with 52 percent of the vote.[5]

Chowdhury was re-elected to Parliament in 2008 from Chittagong-5 as a candidate of Awami League with 49 percent of the votes.[6] Chowdhury served as the Chairman of the Parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.[7] He was a member of the parliamentary standing committee on the Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs ministry.[8]

Chowdhury was elected to parliament from Chittagong-6 in 2014 as an Awami League candidate in an uncontested election boycotted by other political parties.[9][5]

In January 2015, Chowdhury was elected to the Human Rights Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.[10] He worked with cases from various countries across the World. Notable cases would include the unlawful detention of Senator Leila de Lima from the Philippines over illegal drug allegations, the murder of an Maldivian MP, Afrasheem Ali, the assassinations of four Lankan members of parliaments Joseph Pararajasingham, MP, Nadarajah Raviraj, MP, T. Maheshwaran, MP, D. M. Dassanayake, MP and the attempted murder of S. Shritharan, MP from the same country.

Chowdhury was re-elected to Parliament in 2018 as a candidate of Awami League with 230, 471 votes while his nearest rival, Jashim Uddin Shikder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, received 2, 244 votes.[5]

A champion of social development, he was presented upon with the prestigious ‘UNESCO Award’ by UNESCO Academic Development Project for his role relating to health care, education and women empowerment. He is the only MP from Bangladesh to have received five national awards from the Honourable Prime Minister of Bangladesh Her Excellency Sheikh Hasina for his outstanding contributions in the fields of tree plantation and agriculture. His works did not go unnoticed in neighbouring countries either. He was awarded Acharya Dinesh Chandra Sen Gold Medal in India for his role in non-violence in the local politics of Bangladesh. A member of Bangladesh Awami League, the ruling party, he held the post of Acting President of Chittagong north district Awami League and is currently the member of the sub committee on Science and Technology of the central Awami League. Additionally he has worked with the development of the National Shooting Federation as its vice president in Bangladesh and is himself a silver medallist of that organisation.
