Mahton
Mahton or Mehta is a title of Rajputs in Punjab doaba region. There are many misconceptions between mehta and mahtom. [1] Mahtam , mahato is a low caste on the other hand mahta was a title of Brahmins and Rajput for their respect and honour Many Rajput in doaba region are known as title of mahton which come from title mehta not to be confused with low caste mahtam or mahato both are different. Mehta title is used by Rajputs of jammu , uttrakhand and punjab doaba region have mehta title . Mehta title Rajputs mistakenly written as mahton in 1883 census but they were enlisted as Mahta Rajput in 1892 census and it was written in that census that mehta is a title of honour and respect this was enlisted on the basis of 1852 land distribution documents of british government in that documents they enlisted as Rajputs .[2] The H.A rose done many mistakes in their books first one is he is mentioning Raja jagdeo brother and Raja jai singh sawai as mahton raja in their book a glossary of tribe of northern india but both of them raja jagdeo ans raja jai singh swai was rajput . Later in 1935 there is convention in punjab british government announced their mistake of census and officially annouced that mehta is a title and it was removed on the register of tehsil of doaba region and in later census all of them were enlisted as Rajput and the title mehta or mahton was removed .
