Robot Shalu (रोबोट शालू) is the first Artificially Intelligent Humanoid Robot of the World, developed at home with waste materials,^[1] that can speak 9 Indian and 38 foreign languages.^[2]^[3] It is created by by a Computer Science Teacher of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan,^[4] currently posted at Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Bombay.^[5]^[6]^[7] He belongs to a very small village Rajamalpur, post Mokalpur,] tahsil Mariahu, district Jaunpur, state Uttar Pradesh, India.^[8]^[9] Shalu can speak 9 Indian languages (Hindi, Bhojpuri, Bengali, Guajarati, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Nepali) and 38 foreign languages (including English, Japanese, German, French, Italian, Chinese, Spanish).^[10]^[11]

The robot is developed at home using waste materials such as aluminum, plastic, cardboard, wood, newspapers, and other things which are easily available in near local market. None of the 3D-printed component are used for this. Expenditure on the robot is too less i.e. approx. Rs. 50,000.^[12]^[13]^[14]^[15] The robot contains multiple Raspberry Pi, Arduino Microcontrollers and Computer for computation. Major programming of the robot has been done by Mr. Dinesh Patel himself,^[16] and the work on next version of the robot is currently in progress.^[17]

Indian Humanoid Robot Shalu

Recognition by Education Ministry, Govt. of India

Ministry of Education Govt. of India and Education Minister of India Dr. Ramesh Pokharial 'Nishank', posted a tweet about Robot Shalu on 20 March 2021 with the above facts about Robot's capability and materials used and its lingual capabilities.^[18]^[19]

Appreciation letter by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay

Mr. Patel received a letter Professor Supratik Chakrabarty, a professor of Computer Science and Engineering department in IIT Bombay, he appreciated his work and the robot. In the letter he said that Its a really great development and this robot can be used in multiple fields viz. Education, Entertainment and many more. He opens a news diminution in field of Robotics for the new generation scientists and set an example that such type of robotics research can be done at home also.^[20]^[21]^[22]^[23]

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Atmnirbhar Bharat Mission of Indian Govt

Robot Shalu is dedicated to Indian daughters towards Beti Bachao Beti Padhao mission, and this creation is a step towards Atmnirbhar Bharat along with Digital India Mission.^[24]^[25]^[26]

Best innovation in Science and Technology Award

Robot Shalu and her creator Mr. Dinesh Patel received Jagran Josh Education Award 2021 award from Jagran Josh on 25 March 2021 through Honorable Education Minister Govt. of India, as a Best innovation in Science and Technology in year 2020-21.^[27]^[28]

Features

Robot Shalu have multiple set of capabilities such as She can interact in 9 Indian and 38 foreign languages (47 languages).^[29] She can recognize people and remember them, She can understand human emotions like anger, happiness, laughter, jealousy etc. and behaves accordingly.^[30] Shalu can answer many type of questions and also engage in casual talks. She can greet people, shake hands, make fun and jokes. Robot can solve simple math problems,^[31] give information about General Knowledge, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography and all as well as conduct verbal quizzes.^[32] Shalu also can deliver weather reports, and readout horoscopes based on Date of Birth, current News, recipes, book reviews, movies reviews.^[33]^[34]

Use of Robot Shalu

Shalu can be used as a Robot Teacher in schools to perform repeated task in classroom and answer the queries of students.^[35] She can work as Receptionist at different offices to reply the queries of customer verbally and via e-mail and SMS as well.^[36] She can be used as a talking companion to senior citizens and young children at home.^[37]^[38]^[39]

History

Dinesh Patel tells that, S. Shankar directed Robot (Enthiran)^[40]^[41] and Hanson Robotics developed social humanoid robot, Sophia, became his prime motivation to build the robot. He worked on the robot for 3 years.^[42] The first version of the robot was introduced to the world by the news telecast of DD News on 23 Nov 2020.^[43]
