The Siege of Chittorgarh was a military operation fought in 1791 at Chittorgarh Fort in the Kingdom of Mewar. Forces of the Maratha Empire under the authority of Mahadji Shinde, with the cooperation of the Kingdom of Mewar, besieged the Salumbar rebels who controlled the fort. The siege ended in a Maratha victory, and Chittorgarh Fort was subsequently restored to the Maharana of Mewar.
Background
Chittorgarh was one of the principal fortresses of the Kingdom of Mewar. During a period of internal political instability in Mewar, the fort came under the control of the Salumbar faction led by Rawat Bhim Singh of Salumbar.
The Maharana of Mewar sought assistance from Mahadji Shinde, whose forces exercised considerable military and political influence in northern India during this period. Maratha forces were subsequently employed to recover Chittorgarh from the Salumbar rebels.
Siege
In 1791, Maratha forces acting under the authority of Mahadji Shinde advanced against Chittorgarh Fort. The operation was conducted by forces associated with Ambaji Ingale.
The Marathas established siege positions around Chittorgarh and brought artillery against the fort. Batteries were established and the fortress was subjected to bombardment while the Salumbar forces continued to hold the position.
The pressure of the siege eventually compelled the defenders to surrender Chittorgarh. The capture of the fortress ended the Salumbar faction's control over Chittorgarh.
Aftermath
Following the Maratha victory, Chittorgarh Fort was restored to the Maharana of Mewar. The operation strengthened the Maharana's position against the rebellious Salumbar faction and demonstrated the military influence exercised by Mahadji Shinde's forces in Rajputana during the late eighteenth century.
