Vanchi was the headquarters of the Chera dynasty at Kodungallur and Karur which ruled central Kerala and western Tamil Nadu (the Kongu country) in the early historic south India.[1][2] [3] It is speculated that the site corresponded to the medieval Vanchi Karur, identified modern Kodungallur,Kerala and Karur, Tamil Nadu.[3][2]

Both Chera (Kerala) capitals are referred to as "Vanchi":
