History

On April 16, 2007 , the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad was expanded into GHMC by merging 12 municipalities and eight grama panchayats surrounding the city.<ref>"Greater Hyderabad formed".</ref><ref>"GHMC expansaion plan likely to double wards of civic body to 300".</ref> The number of wards then had gone up from 100 to 150.<ref name="2007history"/> The number of zones increased to 6, number of circles expanded to 30.

2025 Delimitation

The number of wards in GHMC increased from 150 to 300 as part of restructuring notified in December 2025.<ref>"GHMC gets flak for 'unscientific' ward boundaries; over 4,000 objections filed". In the Old City, delimitation has resulted in 70 to 80 wards, while in the outer areas — where populations touch 70,000 — GHMC has created just one ward. For GHMC, reservations were notified for all 300 wards in January 2026. GHMC split (2026-present)
