| According to the legends, [[Pandava|Pandavas]] settled around in the area during their period in exile. This area was ruled by a succession of mighty kingdoms. However, it was during the rule of the Dinajpur Raj (1722-1760) that it got its distinctiveness. On 15 August 1947, when India was granted independence, the area was in a state of confusion, but when the [[Radcliffe Line]], demarcating the borders between India and Pakistan was published on 17 August 1947 Raiganj, then in the undivided Dinajpur district, was placed in India and the new district of West Dinajpur was created.
