Chatterjee or Chattopadhyay is a Bengali Hindu family name, used primarily by Pancha-Gauda Brahmins in India, and associated with the Bengali Brahmin caste.[1] Chatterjee is an Anglicized variant of the Sanskritized Chattopadhyay.[1] English language spellings include Chatterjee, Chatterjea, Chatarji, Chatterji, Chaterjee, Chattopadhyay, and Chattopadhyaya.[2][3][4][5][6] Together with Banerjees, Mukherjees, Gangulys, Chatterjees form the Kulin Brahmins, the highest tier of the Bengali caste system.[7] They belong to the Kashyapa gotra.
