Vikram Gokhale (born 30 October 1940)[1] is an Indian film, television and stage actor, notable for his roles in Marathi theatre, and Hindi films and television.[2] He is the only and greatest method actor of Marathi films. He is the son of another well-known veteran Marathi theater and film actor, Chandrakant Gokhale.[3][4]

Gokhale made his directorial debut in 2010, with the Marathi film Aaghaat. Produced by Sprint Arts Creation and executive producer Rajesh Damble, the film is based on a story written by Dr. Nitin Lavangare. The cast of the film includes actors Mukta Barve and Dr. Amol Kolhe and was shot in Pune.

He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2011 for his Acting in Theatre, given by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance & Drama.[5] In 2013, he won the National Film Award for Best Actor category for his Marathi film Anumati.[6]

Personal life

Gokhale's great grandmother Durgabai Kamat was the first female actor of the Indian screen, while his grandmother Kamlabai Gokhale (Kamlabai Kamat at that time) was the first female child actor of Indian cinema.[7] His father Chandrakant Gokhale was a veteran Marathi film and stage artist and has acted in over 70 Marathi and Hindi films.[8]

Gokhale runs a real estate firm called Sujata Farms in Pune.[9]

He is also an active social activist. His family's charitable foundation provides financial support for disabled soldiers, Children of lepers, and education of orphan children.[citation needed]

In Feb 2016 due to a throat ailment, Gokhale retired from stage activities, though he still continues film work.[10]
