Ishan Pranav Kumar Pandey Kishan (born 18 July 1998) is an Indian cricketer from Bihar. He made his international debut for the India cricket team in March 2021.[1][2] In December 2015, he was named as the captain of India's squad for the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.[3] Kishan is a left-handed batsman and a wicket-keeper.

Biography

Ishan was born in Patna, Bihar. His father Pranav Kumar Pandey, is a builder by profession. Ishan's brother Raj Kishan, supported him in pursuing cricket as career.[4] Due to registration issue between Bihar Cricket Association and the BCCI, Ishan started playing for neighboring state Jharkhand based on advice from a senior player and friend. As per Ishan's coach, his idols are former Indian team captain M.S. Dhoni and former Australian wicket-keeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist.[5][6]

Career

On 6 November 2016, Ishan Kishan scored 273 runs against Delhi in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy. This was the highest score by a player for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy.[7][8] He was the leading run-scorer for Jharkhand in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy, with 484 runs in six matches.[9]

In January 2018, he was bought by the Mumbai Indians in the 2018 IPL auction.[10] He was the leading run-scorer for Jharkhand in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy, with 405 runs in nine matches.[11] In October 2018, he was named in India C's squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy,[12] scoring a century in the tournament's final.[13] In February 2019, in the 2018–19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he scored an unbeaten century against Jammu & Kashmir.[14] In the next match, against Manipur, scored 113 not out, to record back-to-back centuries in the tournament.[15]

In August 2019, he was named in the India Red team's squad for the 2019–20 Duleep Trophy.[16][17] In October 2019, he was named in India A's squad for the 2019–20 Deodhar Trophy.[18]

He was the highest run-scorer for the Mumbai Indians in the 2020 IPL, with 516 runs from 14 matches[19] and won the most sixes award of the season.[20] On 20 February 2021, on the opening day of the 2020–21 Vijay Hazare Trophy, Kishan scored 173 runs against Madhya Pradesh.[21] Jharkhand finished their innings on 422/9, the highest total by any team in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.[22] He took seven catches behind the stumps, to record the most catches taken by a wicket-keeper in a List A match.[23]

International career

In February 2021, Kishan was named in India's Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their series against England.[24] It was his maiden international call-up to the India cricket team.[25] He made his T20I debut for India on 14 March 2021, against England, scoring 56 off 32 before getting out lbw to Adil Rashid.[26] India went on to win the game by seven wickets with Kishan bring named as the man of the match.[27]

In June 2021, he was named in India's One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) squads for their series against Sri Lanka.[28]
