In October 2020, he was appointed as the [[Commandant of the Indian Military Academy]]. It is believed by a wide section that his poor handling of affairs in Eastern Ladakh led to the volatile security situation along the Line of Actual Control in 2019-20. This can be attributed to his inexperience along the matters related to China and PLA as he never served along the Chinese frontier. The situation in Ladakh saw a massive mobilization of troops and equipment on both sides and loss of lives not only in violent clashes but also due to weather and terrain related ailments to which troops suddenly inducting from plains were subjected to without presence of any viable infrastructure in Ladakh.
