Traders have been utilising the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) to channel palm oil through Nepal into India. The Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA), which is the leading body in the vegetable oil sector, has urged the government to find solutions to eliminate the indirect procurement of palm oil and soyoil from Nepal using the provisions of SAFTA. This indirect route enables Malaysia to redirect palm oil via Nepal as a countermeasure against India's decision to halt imports of Malaysian palm oil, following Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's remarks regarding the revocation of Kashmir's special status. Palm oil represents almost two-thirds of India’s total edible oil imports, with the country obtaining palm oil primarily from Indonesia and Malaysia, while soybean oil is sourced chiefly from Argentina and Brazil. Additionally, sunflower oil is imported from Ukraine.
