According to the 2011 census, Raiganj had a population of 183,612. It had a literacy rate of 81.70%. Raiganj is an important trade center for agricultural items and jute. Rice milling is an impotant industry. <ref name= ‘brittanica’/>

Raiganj railway station came up in 1889, when the [[Assam Bengal Railway]] extended its Parbatipur metre gauge line to Kathihar. After partition of India the line was bifurcated.
