| Suri came into limelight in 1765, when during the regime of the [[East India Company]] the area was a part of Vishnupur, and possibly an assistant collector posted at Suri. In 1793, when Vishnupur was transferred to Burdwan collectorate, the assistant collector possibly continued at Suri. In 1809, when the district was administered from Murshidabad, the assistant collector remained at Suri. In 1820, Birbhum was made a separate district, possibly with a district collector at Suri.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://birbhum.gov.in/history/ | title= Birbhum | work= About district-History |publisher= Government of West Bengal| access-date = 11 July 2023}}</ref>

| |
| Suri is identified with ‘’morobba’’. Anybody visiting Suri makes it a point to buy these delicasies from sweetmeat shops around the town. These are prepared by dipping raw vegetables or fruits in sugar syrup. “The common ones available include potoler (made from pointed gourd) morabba, bel er morabba, chal kumror (ridge pumpkin) morabba and amlokir (amla) morabba.” <ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.getbengal.com/details/the-morabba-of-siuri-was-introduced-by-portuguese| title= The morabba of Siuri was introduced by Portuguese | work= |publisher= Get Bengal | access-date = 12 July 2023}}</ref>
| |
| | |
| It is believed that the Portuguese settlers first made it at Rajnagar. However, another view is that Hariprasad Dey, when visiting Delhi in the 18th century was impressed by the ‘’Petha’’, a common sweet readily available in northern India. On return, he introduced the ‘’morobba’’ here. <ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.getbengal.com/details/did-you-know-morabba-of-siuri-is-a-portuguese-sweet#:~:text=Morabba%20of%20Siuri%3A%20Although%20Siuri%20of%20Birbhum%20is,Raw%20vegetables%20and%20fruits%20are%20dipped%20in%20syrup. | title= Did you know Morabba of Siuri is a Portuguese sweet? | work= |publisher=Get Bengal | access-date = 12 July 2023}}</ref>
