The Minister of Defence (Urdu: 'وزیرِ دفاع') leads the Ministry of Defence. This minister is part of the Prime Minister's cabinet and must be a member of Parliament. Historically, the defence portfolio has often been held by the head of government, whether that be the President or the Prime Minister. Liaquat Ali Khan was the first individual to serve as defence minister in Pakistan.
