Bakhtiar was elected as a member of [[National Assembly of Pakistan]] from the [[Quetta]]-[[Pishin, Pakistan|Pishin]] constituency in 1977. Yahya was also appointed to the [[Senate of Pakistan]]. He was appointed [[Attorney General of Pakistan]] again when [[Benazir Bhutto]] became [[Prime Minister of Pakistan|Prime Minister]] in 1988.
