During the [[Indo-Pakistani War of 1965]], he was awarded the Vir Chakra [[Vir Chakra|VrC]] for shooting down a [[F-86 Sabre|Sabre jet]] with his [[Folland Gnat]] jet on 4 September. It was the first kill of independent India.
