He was subsequently hired as a marketing research analyst with Commodore Corporation, a manufacturer of mobile homes.<ref name="auto1"/> Commodore asked Gupta to gather a list of every mobile home dealer in the United States.<ref name="auto1"/> After Gupta realized that most of the available sources were either outdated or incomplete, he ordered all available 4,800 Yellow Pages phone directories and set out to compile the list himself.<ref name="auto1"/>

With the help of another employee, Gupta sorted the books by state. Commodore told Gupta that he and the second employee could work on the project on their own time, and once they had completed it, the company would consider buying the list. After Gupta completed the list, he gave Commodore two options: pay $9,000 for exclusive rights to the list, or receive it free of charge and allow Gupta and his partner to sell it to Commodore's competitors. Balking at the $9,000 cost, Commodore chose the latter option.
