== Biography ==
Balachandran was born on 25 November 1924 at [[Thamarassery]] in [[Kozhikode district]] to Dr. Narayanan Nair and Narayani. Unable to finish his intermediate education at [[Government Victoria College, Palakkad|Palakkad Victoria College]] due to ill health, he joined the Kozhikode newspaper ''Dinaprabha'' in 1949 as a journalist.<ref name="mathobituary" /> He used to write articles in ''Sanjayan'' and ''Viswaroopam'' under the pen-name of ''Thampi''.<ref name="manorama">{{cite news|url=http://www.manoramaonline.com/cgi-bin/MMOnline.dll/portal/ep/malayalamContentView.do?articleType=Malayalam+News&contentId=6549801&contentType=EDITORIAL&BV_ID=@@@|title=വിംസീ അന്തരിച്ചു|publisher=Malayala Manorama|language=ml|date=10 January 2010|access-date=24 January 2010}}</ref> In 1950, he became the assistant editor at ''[[Mathrubhumi]]''. == Sports journalism ==
At a time when Malayalam newspapers dedicated little space to sports news, Vimcy started an entire sports page with Mathrubhumi.<ref name="metronews">{{cite news|url=http://www.metrovaartha.com/2010/01/09103955/VIMCY.html|title=വിംസി അന്തരിച്ചു|publisher=Metro Vartha|language=ml|date=9 January 2010|access-date=24 January 2010}}</ref> It was under him that sports writing became a separate branch of journalism in Kerala.
