Vijayapala was born to the Chandela ruler [[Vidyadhara (Chandela king)|Vidyadhara]]. No inscription from his reign is available.{{sfn|R. K. By the end of Vidyadhara's reign, the [[Ghaznavid]] invasions had weakened the Chandela kingdom.
