The name 'Vadipatti' derived from the root word 'Vaayil' or 'Vaasal' means the door or entrance. It has the historic background, it was the one of the boundaries and the entrance of Madurai and also the camping place of Pandyas which evident from the Kulasekara Pandian's period.<br />

There is a bifurcated river of Vaigai (aka [[Mullai Periyaru]] Irrigational Channel) runs south of this small township. There is a village near to this place called Kulasekaran Kottai, where Kulasekara Pandian of Pandya Dynasty had his palace and [[Meenakshi]] temple constructed here by him still exist.
