==Early life and education==&lt;br /&gt;
Prof. Rao was born in a remote village Kollapur ([[Telangana]]) and studied in government schools in Telugu medium until his 12th standard (Intermediate education). Rao obtained his [[B. Tech.]] degree from [[Kakatiya Institute of Technology and Science]], Warangal in 1986 with distinction and his [[M. Tech.]] from [[IIT Bombay]] in 1991. Prof. Rao spent 18 years as a faculty member at IIT Bombay before moving to IIT Delhi as the Director.  Ramgopal Rao has also held short term visiting positions in [[University of California, Los Angeles]] in May–July 2001 in the USA.
