'''Ugrasena''' ({{lang-sa|उग्रसेन}}) is a [[Yadava|puranic]] king in [[Mahabharata]] epic. He was the king of [[Mathura]], a kingdom that was established by the powerful [[Vrishni]] tribes from [[Yaduvanshi]] clan. Lord Krishna's Uncle, King Kansa, was the son of Ugrasena and Lord Krishna himself was the grandson of Ugrasena. He established his grandfather as the ruler of Mathura again after defeating his uncle, King Kansa who was a wicked ruler. Before this, King Ugrasena was overthrown from power by his own son Kansa and was sentenced to prison along with his daughter [[Devaki]] and son in law [[Vasudeva]] to prison. Devki and Vasudev were parents of Lord Krishna.<br />

Samba, the son of Krishna and great grand son of Ugrasena had insulted sages by disguising as pregnant female and asked the sages to identify the gender of the baby to be born. The angry sage cursed. As per the curse from sages, Samba next day delivered an iron rod. The Yadavas gave news about this incident to Ugrasena who had the rod turned into powder and thrown into the sea. He also prohibited liquor in his kingdom.
