Colonel &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Thomas Myles Sandys&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (12 May 1837 – 18 October 1911) was a British [[British Army|army]] officer and [[Conservative Party (UK)|Conservative Party]] politician who sat in the [[House of Commons of the United Kingdom|House of Commons]] from 1885 to 1911.&lt;br /&gt;

He was born in [[Blackheath, London]], and was the only son of Captain Thomas Sandys of the [[Royal Navy]].&amp;lt;ref name=biog&amp;gt;{{cite news |title=Biographies of Candidates |work=[[The Times]] |page=4 |date=26 November 1885 }}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; Following his education at [[Shrewsbury School]], he was commissioned as an officer in the 73rd [[Bengal Native Infantry]], a military unit of the [[Honourable East India Company]].&amp;lt;ref name=obit&amp;gt;{{cite news |title=Obituary: Col. Sandys |work=[[The Times]] |page=11 |date=19 October 1911 }}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; After fighting in the [[Indian Rebellion of 1857]] he exchanged into the [[Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment)|7th (or Royal Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot]], part of the regular British Army. He was to serve in the 7th Foot for twenty years, retiring with the rank of captain.&amp;lt;ref name=biog/&amp;gt;&amp;lt;ref name=obit/&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

He moved to the family&amp;#039;s ancestral home, [[Graythwaite Hall]], near [[Ulverston]] which was then in [[Lancashire]].&amp;lt;ref name=biog/&amp;gt; He had the gardens remodelled by [[Thomas Hayton Mawson]]. He continued his association with the armed forces as honorary colonel of the 3rd (Militia) Battalion of the [[Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire)|Loyal North Lancashire Regiment]], a position he held until 1897,&amp;lt;ref name=obit/&amp;gt; and as honorary colonel of the 1st [[Volunteer Force (Great Britain)|Volunteer]] Battalion of the regiment from April 1902.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{London Gazette|issue=27422|page=2284|date=4 April 1902}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; He was a staunch Protestant, becoming Grand Master of the [[Orange Institution|Loyal Orange Lodge of England]] and was a [[lord-lieutenant|deputy lieutenant]] for the County of Lancashire.&amp;lt;ref name=obit/&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

In 1852 he leased the mining rights of his land at [[Roanhead]] to the Kennedy Brothers.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;[[Lancashire Records Office]], Preston Lease of mineral rights at Ronhead, Myles Sandys to C S Kennedy DD Sa 9/11&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; The mines were among the most productive in the area and were worked until 1942.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The [[Redistribution of Seats Act 1885]] created the new constituency of [[Bootle (UK Parliament constituency)|Bootle]], and Sandys was elected as the first [[Member of Parliament (United Kingdom)|Member of Parliament]] for the seat.&amp;lt;ref name=biog/&amp;gt; He retained the seat at subsequent elections, several times being elected unopposed.&amp;lt;ref name=obit/&amp;gt; He [[resignation from the British House of Commons|resigned his seat]] in March 1911.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{cite news |title=Political Notes |work=[[The Times]] |page=10 |date=14 March 1911 }}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; He died later that year, at his London home at 87 [[Jermyn Street]], aged 74.&lt;br /&gt;
