Thangavelu Engineering College was founded in Salem in 1994 by the Ponniamman Education trust by the chairman Mr. [[K.V. Thangkabalu]]. After a few years the college was moved to [[Chennai]], in the location of Karapakkam in [[Rajiv Gandhi Salai]].<br />
