The '''Thangal Kunju Musaliar College of Engineering''', commonly known as '''TKMCE,''' is the first government aided engineering institution in the Indian state of [[Kerala]]. It is located in the [[Karicode|Karikode]] neighborhood, {{convert|6|km}} from the city of [[Kollam]] in southern Kerala. The college was affiliated to [[Kerala University]] till 2014 before joining the then newly formed [[APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University]].

== History ==

The college was founded by the TKM Educational Trust,<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|title=TKM College of Engineering|url=https://tkmce.ac.in/the-college.html|access-date=2020-08-13|language=en-US}}</ref> an organization established by Sri, [[Janab]] [[Thangal Kunju Musaliar]]. The college's foundation stone was laid on 3 February 1956 by [[Rajendra Prasad|Dr. Rajendra Prasad]], the first [[President of India]], and was inaugurated by Prof. [[Humayun Kabir]], the Cabinet Minister for Scientific and Cultural Affairs, on 3 July 1958. The institution then went on to become the first self financed private engineering college and the second engineering college (after [[College of Engineering, Trivandrum|CET]]) in the [[Kerala]] state,<ref name=":0" /> before acquiring the government aided status.

The college started with 120 students and a faculty of six, offering courses in [[mechanical engineering]], [[civil engineering]] and [[electrical engineering]].

The college is located at Karicode, a suburb town of the coastal city of Kollam on the [[Kollam]]- [[Sengottai]] [[National Highway 744 (India)|NH-208]] road. There is a railway station at Karicode called Kilikollur railway station. Direct trains connect [[Kollam]] Junction Railway station to all important cities of the country. The college is only 6 kilometres away from [[Kollam]] city centre (Chinnakada), and only 2.2 kilometres from [[Kallumthazham|Kallumthaazham]] junction.
