At the time of Sale’s service in India, [[History of cricket in India to 1918#Beginning of first-class cricket|first-class cricket in India]] was restricted to the [[Bombay Quadrangular|Bombay Presidency]] matches between [[Europeans cricket team|Europeans]] and [[Parsees cricket team|Parsees]] in [[Mumbai|Bombay]] and [[Poona]].
