Mavalankar took active part in the [[Indian Independence movement]] and on the call of [[Mahatma Gandhi]] participated in the [[Quit India Movement]] in 1942, which led to her imprisonment by the British authorities.<ref name="PI" /> She attended the [[coronation of Queen Elizabeth II]] held in June 1953.<ref name="Jain" /><br />

The death of Ganesh Mavalankar in February 1956 prompted a bye-election for the [[Ahmedabad (Lok Sabha constituency)|Ahmedabad]] seat.
