&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Sultanpur&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; is a city situated on the banks of holy river Gomati in the Indian state of [[Uttar Pradesh]]. Although the area has been part of successive northern [[Middle kingdoms of India|Indian kingdoms]] through centuries, the [[recorded history]] of the city began in the [[Colonial India|colonial]] times. Long a center of [[Hindu]] and [[Buddhist culture]] it came under [[Muslim]] rule in the 12th century. The city was completely destroyed during the military operations of the [[Revolt of 1857]].&lt;br /&gt;

The original town was situated on the left bank of the Gomti River. This area has dominating and huge Hindu Rajput population in the pre British era, Rajput has various subcaste among them, Bhale Sultan is one of them. It is believed that this city was named after these Rajputs. Many among these Rajputs later accepted Islam and are known today as [[Khanzada Rajputs|Khanzada]] (son of Khan) in the region. This city has been identified by General Cunnigham as Sultanpur mentioned by Hiuentsang, the Chinese traveller. He states that there was in his time a dilapidated stupa of Ashoka and that Buddha taught here for six months. There are Buddhist remains still visible at Mahmoodpur, a village, 8&amp;amp;nbsp;km distant to the north-west of Sultanpur.&lt;br /&gt;
Before annexation a military station and cantonment were established on the right bank of the river in a village then known as Girghit but more commonly called by officials Sultanpur or Chhaoni Sarkar and by the rustic population Kampu or the Cam. The present town of Sultanpur has been developed at this site. The effective literacy rate of the 7+ population of Sultanpur was 87.6%, of which male literacy was 91.6% and female literacy rate was 83.2%. The [[Scheduled Castes]] population was 7,706.
