The Bansgaon seat is reserved for [[Scheduled Caste]] category. As a [[Samajwadi Party]] candidate, Subhawati obtained 2,03,591 votes against [[Bharatiya Janata Party]] (BJP)'s [[Raj Narain Passi]] in the [[1996 Indian general election]].
