He is a professor in the Department of Management, [[University of Évora]], [[Portugal]], and also a vice-rector of the university. He was a three-year fellow of the Asia Center at Harvard University from 2015 to 2018. He is also the executive president of the Science Park of the region of Alentejo. He is the president of the External Evaluation team of the Portuguese University Evaluation Commission (A3ES). Previously he was the Dean of the Doctoral School, and prior to that, was the director for the Centre of Advanced Studies in Management and Economics as well as the coordinator of the Program in Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
