The modern name is derived from [[Sanskrit]] form &amp;#039;Suvarnakundya&amp;#039;{{citation needed|date=April 2020}}, the ancient name of the area.&lt;br /&gt;

== History ==&lt;br /&gt;
The [[arthashastra]] of [[Kautilya]] mentioned flourishing trade with Kamrup. He mentioned finest sik of his times was produced in Sonkuriha (Suvarnakundya).&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Kiran Singh (1994), Textiles in ancient India: from Indus Valley Civilization to Maurya period, p.36&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Anjan Kumar Bhattacharyya (1988),  Modern Accounting Concepts in Kautilya&amp;#039;s Arthaśāstra, p.134&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; It also produced a special perfume named &amp;#039;Tailaparnika&amp;#039;, which also produced in at least six other places within [[Kamrup region]]. The Kamrup also produced [[Sandalwood|Chandana]] and [[Agarwood|Aguru]] products at that time.&lt;br /&gt;
