Born in [[Calcutta]] (now [[Kolkata]]), India, on 22 August 1915, Sombhu Mitra was the sixth child of three sons and four daughters born of Sarat Kumar Mitra, an employee of the Geological Survey of India, and Satadalbasini Mitra. He started his schooling in Chakraberia Middle English School, Calcutta and later continued in the [[Ballygunge Government High School]], Calcutta, where he developed interest reading Bengali plays and became active in school dramatics. His first appearance in [[Bengali theatre]] was in Rangmahal Theatre in north Kolkata in 1939, thereafter he moved to the Minerva, Natyaniketan and Srirangam theatres.&lt;br /&gt;

In 1943, he joined [[Indian People&amp;#039;s Theatre Association]] (IPTA). In 1944, several old theatrical conventions were broken when the play &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Nabanna&amp;#039;&amp;#039; written by [[Bijon Bhattacharya]] and co-directed by Sombhu Mitra for IPTA was staged. In 1948, Sombhu Mitra formed a new theatre group, [[Bohurupee]] in Kolkata, which ushered the group-theatre movement in [[West Bengal]].&lt;br /&gt;

==The Bohurupee productions==&lt;br /&gt;
Under Sombhu Mitra&amp;#039;s direction, the Bohurupee staged several successful productions. In December 1950, the Bohurupee presented three plays in the New Empire theatre&amp;amp;nbsp;– [[Tulsi Lahiri]]&amp;#039;s &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Pathik]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Chenda Tar]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and Sombhu Mitra&amp;#039;s own creation, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Ulukhagra]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.  In 1954, [[Rabindranath Tagore]]&amp;#039;s &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Rakta Karabi]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; was staged by the Bohurupee, followed by his &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Bisarjan]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Raja]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Char Adhyay]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.
