In 1878, the railway line from Calcutta (later called Sealdah) station to Siliguri was in two stages – {{Track gauge|5ft6in|lk=on}} [[broad gauge]] from Calcutta to Damookeah Ghat, on the southern bank of the [[Padma River|Padma]], across the river in a ferry and then {{track gauge|1000mm|allk=on}} to Siliguri. In 1881, the {{track gauge|610mm|lk=on}} [[narrow-gauge]] line from [[Darjeeling Himalayan Railway|Siliguri to Darjeeling]] was added.
