Shoba Purushothaman was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She attended the Methodist Girls' School. She has a BA in English Literature and Japanese language from [[Monash University]] (Melbourne, Australia), and a Master's in Economic Communication from the [[American University]] (Washington D.C., USA).

In 1986, she was awarded a Journalism Fellowship by the [[Asia Foundation]] in the United States. In 2000, she completed the Owner-President Management program at [[Harvard Business School]].

Purushothaman began her career as a journalist with Malaysian Business, a business magazine based in Kuala Lumpur.
