==History==
The name of the city is derived from the term "''shivmoga''". A version of etymology is due to the story that Lord [[Shiva]] drank the [[Tunga River|Tunga river]] water using "''Mogge''", hence the name Shiva-mogga". Another version of etymology is that the name is derived from the term "''Sihi-Mogge''", meaning "sweet pot".<ref>{{cite web |title=History of Shivamogga |url=https://shimoga.nic.in/en/history/ |website=Shivamogga District |publisher=National Informatics Centre, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India |access-date=8 December 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200804162908/https://shimoga.nic.in/en/history/ |archive-date=4 August 2020 |language=en}}</ref>
